Can a Locksmith Open My Safe Without Drilling? (Yes, Usually)
Quick answer: Yes, usually. Most residential mechanical-dial safes can be manipulated open without damage in 30-90 minutes. Cost: $200-$500 typical. Drilling is a last resort and we tell you in advance if your specific safe will require it. Combination reset after opening is included.
The two opening techniques
Manipulation means listening to and feeling the dial mechanism to deduce the combination. The technique works on most residential mechanical-dial safes, Sargent & Greenleaf 6730, S&G 6630, AMSEC ESL10, Mosler MR302, LaGard 3330, and dozens of similar Group 2 dials. Time: 30-90 minutes for a skilled tech. No damage. The safe ends up undamaged and we set you a new combination on the spot.
Drilling is a last resort. When required (some Group 1 safes, fire safes with electronic locks that have failed in locked state, some commercial vaults), we drill at the manufacturer's specified access point, usually a small hole in a known location that lets us trip the bolt mechanism. We then plug the hole cleanly. The safe remains functional and looks basically intact.
When manipulation works
- Group 2 mechanical-dial residential safes (most common Milwaukee-area home safes)
- Older commercial safes with mechanical locks (pre-1990 typical)
- Many file cabinet and document safes
- Some firearms safes (depends on the lock model)
When drilling is required
- Group 1 commercial safes (UL TL-15, TL-30, TRTL-30 ratings)
- Modern electronic locks where the keypad or bolt motor has failed in locked state
- Some fire safes with proprietary anti-manipulation features
- Vault doors at commercial-grade ratings
- Any safe where the manufacturer's manipulation-resistance design specifically defeats the technique
We tell you on dispatch which category your safe falls into. Tell us the make/model and approximate age and we can usually predict accurately before sending a tech.

Frequently asked
Can my safe be opened without drilling?
Most residential safes (Group 2 mechanical-dial) can. Manipulation reads the dial mechanism by feel and sound to deduce the combination. Time: 30-90 minutes typical. No damage. Some Group 1 safes (commercial UL ratings TL-15, TL-30) require drilling at a manufacturer-spec access point we then plug.
What does safe opening cost in Milwaukee?
$200-$500 typical for a residential safe. Manipulation is the usual approach. Combination reset after opening: included. If drilling is required, we drill at a designated access point and plug it cleanly, the safe remains usable. Drilling adds $100-$200 to the job.
How long does it take?
Manipulation: 30-90 minutes typical for residential mechanical-dial safes. Electronic lock failure (battery, keypad): 15-45 minutes. Drilling (when required): 60-120 minutes.
Will my safe still be usable after?
Yes. Manipulation leaves no damage. Drilling at a manufacturer access point with proper plug leaves the safe functional and aesthetically intact. We test bolt throw, dial action, and combination function before we leave.
Do you handle older mechanical-dial safes?
Yes, Sargent & Greenleaf, Mosler, Diebold, LaGard, AMSEC, plus most pre-1980 American-made safes. Common in Milwaukee-area older homes (Bayside, Whitefish Bay, Wauwatosa Village) where original house safes are still in service.
Electronic safe lock died, can you fix it?
Usually yes. Dead battery (most common cause): 15-30 minutes, $80-$150. Failed keypad: replace the keypad, 30-45 minutes, $150-$300. Failed bolt motor: usually means drilling, then replace the motor or convert to mechanical dial, $300-$600.
