What "transponder key" means
A transponder key has a small RFID chip embedded in the plastic head of the key. The car's ignition reader scans the chip when you insert the key, only chips programmed to that specific vehicle will start the engine. A non-programmed key will turn in the lock but the car won't crank. Most vehicles from 1998 onward use transponders. The chip is what makes the work cost $150-$400 instead of the $4 at a hardware-store key duplicator.
Locksmith vs. dealer math
For most Milwaukee-metro vehicles, locksmith wins on three fronts:
- Cost. $100-$300 cheaper. Sometimes more.
- Time. 30-60 minutes on-site vs. 4-24 hours at the dealer (including the appointment scheduling).
- No tow needed. If your car is at home, work, the parking lot, or stuck somewhere. We come to you. The dealer model assumes you can drive the car in, which you usually can't if you've lost the only key.
Dealer wins on: (a) very late-model luxury (Mercedes 2018+, some BMW, some Audi) where dealer programmers are required, (b) very rare imports where the locksmith would have to special-order a key blank.

Frequently asked
How much does it cost to replace a car key in Milwaukee?
Standard transponder key (cut + programmed): $150-$400 by make and year. Basic 3-button fob with key: $80-$200 + program. Smart proximity key: $200-$400 + program. Lost-only-key origination from VIN: $200-$500 (more steps, more time).
Locksmith vs. dealer for a car key, who's cheaper?
Locksmith almost always. A locksmith for a Toyota Camry transponder runs $180-$280 on-site. The Toyota dealer for the same key runs $300-$500 PLUS a $150-$300 tow if you can't drive the car in. For most Milwaukee-metro vehicles, locksmith saves $100-$400. Exceptions: some 2018+ luxury (Mercedes, BMW, Audi) where the dealer programmer is required.
Can a locksmith make a key with no original?
Yes for most makes. We originate from the VIN, pull the key code from the manufacturer's records, cut a new key on-site, program the transponder. Total time: 30-60 minutes. Total cost: $200-$500. Late-model luxury sometimes needs the dealer.
What about 2020+ smart proximity keys?
Most are programmable on-site by a locksmith with the right equipment. Some require dealer-only programmers (Mercedes 2020+, some BMW 2019+, some Audi). Cost when locksmith-programmable: $200-$400. Tell the dispatcher the year and model. We'll know on the call whether your vehicle is in the locksmith-programmable list.
How long does it take?
Standard transponder cut + program: 30-45 minutes on-site. Lost-only-key origination: 45-90 minutes. Smart proximity: 30-60 minutes. The dealer usually takes 4-24 hours including the appointment + parts wait.
Can my car be towed to your shop instead?
Mobile locksmiths come to you. That's the whole point. We do the work in your driveway or wherever the car is. Towing is the dealer's model, not ours.
